NC PPSB Unarmed Security Guard Requirements
North Carolina Private Protective Services Board requires successful completion of the 16-hour Basic Security Officer Training Course to perform the duties of a security officer in this state. A security guard must be a citizen or resident alien 18 years older. He or she must display good moral character. Administrative Code Title 12 Chapter 7 states that an applicant who has been convicted of particular criminal offenses during the prior five years will be considered to lack good moral character. Disqualifying offenses include those involving firearms, dugs, felonious assault, violence, larceny, burglary, breaking and entering, and moral turpitude.
Unarmed guards must have at least 16 hours of training. Training will cover the following concepts:
- Legal Issues
- The security guard in North Carolina
- Patrol procedures
- Emergency response
- Communications
- Deportment
- Taking notes and writing reports
Training in ‘security officer legal issues’ and ‘the security guard within North Carolina’ together comprise four hours; this is to take place within 20 days of placement on post. The other required training is to take place within 30 days of the time the employee is hired in a permanent capacity.
The trainer is to be Board-certified through PPSB.
This course is offered at both an on-site training classroom as well as a virtual classroom setting for your convenience. Please inquire about our virtual classroom option. This course is required to pursuit the Armed Guard Registration and Training.
Armed Security Guard Requirements (Firearms Course)
North Carolina Private Protective Services Board requires successful completion of the 20-hour Firearms Training Course to perform the duties of an armed security officer in this state. The standard format is conducted over 3 days.
An armed security guard employee must be at least 21. The prospective armed guard must complete an additional course of at least 20 hours. The following content will be covered:
- Legal limitations of security guard power and firearm usage/ applicable statutes
- Handgun safety
- Handgun maintenance
- Handgun fundamentals
- Night firing
The course may be offered by any NC licensed contract security company with a Board-certified instructor.
The armed guard will need to qualify on an approved target course.
This course is also required prior to pursuing PPSB Long Gun registration (Rifle and/or Shotgun) and training.
Armed Security Guard Requirements (Rifle Course)
North Carolina Private Protective Services Board requires successful completion of the 16-hour Rifle/Carbine Training Course in order to utilize a standard .223 Rem or 5.56 NATO bolt action or semi-automatic rifle in the performance of your duties as an armed security officer in this state. The standard format is conducted over 2 days including both classroom and range time, but scheduling can be customized according to the needs of your company or group.
Successful completion of both Unarmed Guard training and Armed Guard training is required to be eligible.

Armed Security Guard Requirements (Shotgun Course)
North Carolina Private Protective Services Board requires successful completion of the 8-hour Shotgun Training Course in order to utilize a standard pump action or semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun in the performance of your duties as an armed security officer in this state. The standard format is conducted in 1 day including both classroom and range time, but scheduling can be customized according to the needs of your company or group.
Successful completion of both Unarmed Guard training and Armed Guard training is required to be eligible.

CCH training
North Carolina law requires the CCH classes to be 8 hours in length and will include and cover the following:
This course includes the NC Concealed Carry Handgun (CCH) training program created by the North Carolina Justice Department. Students will receive comprehensive training on NC legal matters when carrying a handgun and firearm fundamentals. Students who successfully complete this course will receive the required certificate to apply for a CCH permit.
The format of the course will include classroom style lecture, hands-on demonstrations, and live-fire on the range. A written test and shooting qualification are included.

This is a Live Fire class, and we will be qualifying at 3 distances.
3 yards –10 rounds
5 yards –10 rounds
7 yards –10 rounds
The course registration includes instruction, range fees, and targets.
Firearm rental is not included in this course. Students who do not yet own a handgun may rent one and the ammunition at the range. Cost varies depending on the range.
Eye and ear protection will also be required while shooting. Students may rent these from the range if they do not have their own. Cost varies depending on the range.
